UPDATED: This week felt like 18 months.

UPDATED: You’ve all heard me talking about my friend Anissa before.  She’s amazing and she was once generous to me when she didn’t have to be so now I’m trying to do the same.  She’s one of us and is recovering from multiple strokes and after many months is finally coming home (yay!) but she’s currently hemiplegic and her copay for outpatient therapy is $100 a day for the next 40 days.  She’s a mom with small children and they need help.  That’s why I’m asking you to donate if you can.  $10 is ideal but even $5 will help.  And here’s what I’m giving back.  See the sponsorship thing at the bottom of this post?   Leave a comment below saying that you donated even a dollar and in two weeks I’ll pick one person at random and will pimp you (or the site of your choice) for free as the sponsor of the weekly wrap-up.  Click here to donate directly to her family or if that link won’t work for you then you can paypal it to this address: anissa.mayhew@gmail.com.

Thank you, guys.  Thank you for being who you are, and for making a difference, and for making us all feel a little less helpless and alone.

****************************************

It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for the weekly wrap-up, y’all:

This week on my sex column (which is satirical and relatively safe for work if your boss isn’t a douche-canoe):

    This week on the internets:

This week on Good Mom/Bad Mom on the Houston Chronicle:

    This week on shit-I-didn’t-come-up-with-but-wish-I-did-because-it’s-kind-of-awesome:

This week’s wrap-up sponsored by the teams at Mamavation & EarthFootwear who think your ass looks *fantastic* in those jeans.

Comment of the day: I have been pulling for Anissa since her stroke though I don’t know her at all except through some of my Twitter and blog friends. My father-in-law had a stroke recently. A stroke is so devastating for the stroke victim and the family. When my family gets discouraged, I tell them how Anissa’s doing and how it takes TIME. I’m so happy for Anissa and her family that she’s getting to go home. I don’t want you to pimp my blog, I want you to pimp the Race Against Violence here in Houston on March 6. I’m trying to put together a social media team to walk and raise money for the Houston Area Women’s Center. Hope you choose me…it’s important. ~ Kathryn

    1. Did your little person actually say that she hates it when people cut down trees because hurting things makes her sad? I had no idea a dirty hippy could be precious at the same time.

    2. Out of the 10 weirdest things on the internet…. While I loved the unicorn tattoo & the G-spot mouse (excellent!), #6 wins for the weirdest AND grossest! I couldn’t even watch the whole thing. WTF?!?!!!

    3. My kids used amn’t when they were little. I thought it was a phase, but I guess some people don’t grow out to fit. Just because the English language is fraught with exceptions, doesn’t mean we should give up. I’ve been railing against conversate for years, but I think I lost the battle.

    4. Okay, didn’t read any of the links. Because I see you brought back the term douche-canoe and I never used that word until you stopped and then when you stopped I couldn’t stop saying it which was annoying to everyone who knows me since I’m a very ‘douchebag’ kind of name caller. So thanks for fucking up my life for a month.

    5. I am really just commenting because I read in your interview that you obsessively read your comments.

And it makes me feel better if I could just blame you when I don’t finish my chemistry homework because I am too busy reading your blog.

    6. I figured out how to put your sex column into my Google reader. I should get a Nobel Prize or a Pulitzer or something. You’re my only connection to the government, so I’m counting on you to hook me up, yo.

    7. I already donated to Anissa’s fund, but I wanted to say how great I think it is that you spread the work. You’re a good egg, lady. 🙂

    8. I decided that instead of giving something up for Lent, I’m giving something to Anissa, who is technically a stranger to me but I discovered her story thanks to you, Jenny. I’m pulling $10 per week out of my wallet and sending her $60 at Easter. Already have the first bill in the cookie jar!

    9. Of course. I’ve given to Anissa’s family in the past and gladly gave again. I hope everyone can help even if it’s small (to them) – it’s big to her.

Thank you for rounding up the troops, Jenny.

      Love,

    10. Have I mentioned that I love you guys? Because I do. At the risk of getting mushy, you make me so very proud to call you all friends.

    11. Who would have thought that I would join the fight to see Anissia’s great rack again? I hope that they give her a really great support bra in therapy. Just made a donation. GO ANISSA!

    12. I read your ’40 things..’ article in the SEXIS magazine I received at Mom 2.0 to my husband and he died. He just. Died. I think you now have a new fan and he swears he doesn’t read blogs but he’s a liar.

    13. This line from the last link made me laugh, because I’m from Spokane: “They came to a place called Spokane, (which means the place to be bored out of one’s skull).”

    14. P.S. I absolutely give to Anissa. I’m hoping there is SOME WAY I can get down there with V to help. Dawn went earlier and zomg I am jealous to high hell. Love me some Nissa. But no need to put me in the drawing thing. I just think you’re awesome for spreading the word. XO

    15. Donated! That’s so sad. I totally understand cause two summers ago I racked up med bills with an ER surgery. Med bills get SO costly.
It’s sinful, the cost of this stuff. I also hope the politicians can make some agreements soon that can truly help the overflow needs in these situations when insurance runs out. Or those who simply can’t afford insurance in the first place. It’s sad.

    17. I donated, because we’re all in this together. What was I going to do with those bucks anyway? Spend them on something fattening. Thanks, Anissa, for helping me lose weight!

    18. I was going to send $10. But then I decided to take a leaf out of Kim’s book (above) and send her my weekly Starbucks money. That’s more like $15. This means that essentially, Anissa is helping me eat fewer sugary snacks in the morning, which makes her particularly awesome.

    19. I sent Anissa 20 bucks because I love her. And I love her husband, and her kids. And I want to help as much as I can. She is amazing, and I haven’t even known her long enough to see her tweet or blog!

Thank you for introducing me to such an amazing family. And thanks for letting me help.

    20. I don’t need any pimping (I do fine on my own) but I was more than happy to make a donation. My sister suffered a traumatic brain injury in April last year and I’m still helping her deal with the recovery process. I understand the stresses involved in stroke/brain injury recovery all too well. We are lucky enough to live in Canada where the care she needs is completely covered so I am happy to give to someone who doesn’t have that luxury. Er, that sounded incredibly conceited but I really meant it in a nice way!

    21. I will donate directly to her family. I hope through your post her family is just a little better off.
That was thoughtful of you and she is lucky to have such a network of great people behind her.

    22. Donated. No pimping necessary. (p.s. link is not working; had to send to her email addy)

    23. That link isn’t working so I went to my PayPal account. I have been pulling for Anissa since her stroke though I don’t know her at all except through some of my Twitter and blog friends. My father-in-law had a stroke recently, stroke is so devastating for the stroke victim and the family. When my family gets discouraged, I tell them how Anissa’s doing and how it takes TIME. I’m so happy for Anissa and her family that she’s getting to go home.

So I don’t want you to pimp my blog, I want you to pimp the Race Against Violence here in Houston on March 6. I’m trying to put together a social media team to walk and raise money for the Houston Area Women’s Center. Hope you choose me…it’s important.

    24. Congratulations on your inauguration, Madame Czar (is that the right way to address you? You’ll have to let me know)!
I’ve donated. Never had any contact with Anissa but her story has been making me cry in amazement since she went into the hospital. I am blown away by her determination, her family, and the rallying that has since taken place. Miracles happen when we make them happen.

    26. I donated Friday and also posted a link on my low-traffic little bloggy thing. I think I managed to send at least two readers over to donate as well, so hey, its progress! I hope that not only do the Mayhews get enough for the 40 days of copay but also for what are probably some rapidly mounting bills. Anissa’s going to need sutff and people at home to help out and if they can get additional professional help for all of them from the love of their readers I think that would be a wonderful thing. They are an amazing family, Anissa and Peter both, and truly gifted contributors to the blogosphere. Thank you for using your wide bandwidth to reach out on their behalf, its the little things we do for one another that make the biggest difference.

    27. I have to admit I hadn’t heard of Anissa before this hell of hers began, but through you I have read a lot about her and she sounds awesome and funny and like someone totally worthy of all the love and praise you’ve given her. I usually don’t donate in situations like this, and I justify it by telling myself that I can’t afford it and I need to take care of this or that or the other and blah blah blah me. I absolutely can afford it today, and so I donated $100 because Anissa’s worth it. I know from personal experience that sometimes you have to rely on others to pull you through. Before she died, my grandmother’s hospital bills passed the million-dollar mark. My mother and stepfather’s bills are escalating into the hundreds of thousands now, as they both are fighting cancer. A lot of their bills have been covered, though, because of people who came forward and did something about it and helped. They would be destitute if not for the generosity of others. Thank you, Jenny, for being one of the good ones.

    28. Thanks steve- that link worked. I sent in my $10. I have nothing to pimp out- so I’m good!

    29. Thank you so much for posting the link for Anissa, I’m happy to donate and help her family in any way I can. It was so lovely to meet you this weekend and I wish I could’ve been in the panel where you were crowned Czar but I was blogging another panel. I really do hope you enjoy the photos I took of you at the Mad Men party because you looked incredible 🙂

    30. donated and will be donating more. Rachel and I talked about the importance of helping others and she chose to give half an allowance and I tripled that. Hoping the therapy helps Anissa. Oh and if I am picked you can pimp out the girls at Aiming Low who have been doing a great job even without Anissa able to fire anyone.

    31. Donated, again! (Link worked just fine.)
I met Anissa a year ago at a cocktail party at BlissDom. She took my picture and then proceeded to lean up against a table and talk to me for the next 20 minutes. She was sweet, funny, an appreciative audience and had a great rack. I don’t know what else you could want in a person.
Thank you for your generosity towards Anissa and her family. Jesus and James Garfield must be very, very proud of you.

    32. OK, you got me.

I had been thinking of donating when you posted before, and never followed through. I guess that reading the numbers on Anissa’s side of the equation made her situation more tangible for me. Ten bucks didn’t feel like enough to me; I doubled it.

Jenny, I can only hope that if something like that ever happens to me or my family, I’d have friends as caring, compelled to help, resourceful and persistent as you have been for Anissa. With empathy, I wish her and her family all the best; to you, I say thank you, VERY much — not only for the fundraising effort, but also for the fine example you’ve been setting for this community.

    33. Donated once and about to today. $20.00. I’m poor now because I shirk my responsibilities and read blogs all day. Also posted something on the bloggess army site which I meant to do the other day, but had a bunch of deadlines and haven’t had time to touch it. I need an intern. And a little wagon. I’ve always wanted one and never had one. That’s kind of bullshit.

Does anyone want to be my intern for the bloggess army site? And, do you have a wagon?

If I win, I would like you to pimp…. Nesquik. I love me some Nesquik. It’s so tasty. Everyone should know it.

    34. OK. People around here are gonna be hating me in a few days…Donated, but at this point, all I had left was my smokes money…Guess that’s a good thing, until the nic fits kick in. You folks may just be seeing me on the news, but it’s for a good cause. A couple of days of feeling homicidal is totally worth it.

I don’t really have a site or a cause, so I don’t need to be pimped, but I may need bail money. 😉

    35. I don’t have a blog worth pimping, so I’m just donating $10 to help with the copays 😀 My mom is probably going to have her fourth hip surgery in a year, and just taking care of her for THAT is crazy hard, and that’s with her being able to cover all of her copays on her own! I can’t even imagine what I’d do if she had a stroke 🙁 Best wishes to Anissa and her family!

    37. I don’t know Anissa, but I donated, not because I want to be pimped, but because it’s the right thing to do for this obviously lovely family. I hope they get their 400 $10 donations. But if they don’t let us know so we can donate again.

    39. Donated – and also finally popping muh bloggess comment cherry – and I’ll see all the good vibrations and raise some grood vibrations.

    40. $25 to Anissa. I don’t need pimping. Hope the Mayhews end up with loads of money so this can be the one goddamn thing they don’t have to worry about.

    41. Thanks for sharing Anissa’s story here on your blog. I figure it’s the least I can do for as much entertainment as you have provided me. Your blog cracks me up more than the most hilarious comedy film in the theaters and I’m willing to pay $10 for a seat in there.

    42. I’ve been following Peter’s posts since November, but hadn’t check their site in a few days. Thanks for the reminder. Peter generously provided some wonderful advice to me for a friend who’s currently in a situation very similar to Anissa’s. So I was more than happy to return the favor by donating. She’s such an inspiration!

    43. I just paypaled (?) $10.
I don’t know Anissa, but as a fellow parent and fellow human I can relate to being in a tough place and needing community to circle the wagons.
I just want to say that I find your stuff (writing) so much fun and so entertaining. So this gesture is part wanting to help another person, and part wanting to express my gratitude to you for your writing.

      thanks.

    44. I’ve been following her recovery. I hope she makes an amazing recovery. I donated, but don’t need anything pimped. But thanks for the offer 🙂

    45. Went over to Anissa’s website and made a donation. I had something similar happen to my aunt when I was younger and it’s scary and a lot for the family to take on emotionally – never mind the financial end! I’ll definitely be checking in for more on her progress.

    46. Totally donated and would love you to pimp me, uh, I mean, my blog. You rock, and congrats on the crowning. Well deserved!

    47. I donated $5 through paypal. I would say no pimping necessary but if you could see me you would see that I could use a pimp.

    48. i donated $10. posted a link to mayopie on my facebook and also posted a link for prayers for anissa on a previous blog post that i linked back to aiming low. i wish i had a larger following and could help more. thanks so much for posting the donation link 🙂

    49. Thanks for posting Sasquatch Jesus. I’ve read about your friend, and she has my sympathies. I am glad that she is going home, and at least appears to have the chance for some recovery to her right side. I can’t imagine what it would be like to face that kind of medical challenge, then have to face the extra financial burden. I donated a little, but I wish paypal had a way that you could donate out of the pay check of one of the CEO’s of the health insurance companies. I’m sure that Aetna’s head man wouldn’t miss the equivalent of 21 minutes pay to foot the entire bill.

    50. I have no pride… BE MY PIMP!!! I also just donated, but stupid paypal is under my husband’s name, so he’s getting the credit, but IT WAS ME, IT WAS ME!!!

But, seriously, she is an inspiration. I was just getting into reading blogs and writing my own blog when Anissa got sick and I was awed by what an amazing community this blogging world is.

    53. I donated. The paypal link is working.
My mother had multiple strokes. The uphill battle is hard enough without worrying about how to pay for it.
      thank you for doing this.

    54. i donated once. i’ll do it again. one day if my health fails and i’m stuck in a dreary and ridiculously overpriced hospital, i pray that someone as golden as you steps up for me. and if nobody does, i’ll take solace knowing that god will punish everyone who let me die alone and unloved…

    55. So I’ve never ever donated to anything like this, but like the earlier poster mentioned, the humor you provide is well worth the $20 and her story is amazing. I hope this helps take some stress off the family. You are a good friend. I vote for you to pimp that girl you already picked for the comment of the day next weekend.

    56. I should clarify though that I donated yesterday, off the site directly! So I don’t know if your link is working, but I assume it is!

    57. I just donated $20 to Anissa and I’m sending energy her way. You are a good friend to help this way!

    58. Done and donated!!

    63. I know what it’s like to have friends and family struggle through an illness… I’ve donated and my prayers are with Anissa and her family.

    64. I donated $1 for every time I’ve used the term douche canoe. Which is only 10 times, but really should be more.

    65. I donated because I can’t imagine having to work at getting better AND having to worry about paying medical bills. Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.

    66. I read Anissa’s blog and have been keeping tabs on her since this stroke. I saw the latest post asking for help and made a mental note to donate when I got home. (reading blogs at work is one thing, remembering my paypal log in is quite another). So then, naturally, I forgot. I would have remembered even if you didn’t post this update, but you did so I donated, and now it appears that I donated just so you’d pimp my blog. Sigh. Or perhaps this is all some cosmic prophecy and I had nothing to do with it, it’s just the gods wanting Jenny to be my pimp. That makes me your bitch, right? I think I’ll like having a pimp. Does it have to be for my blog? Point is, Anissa needs help and I’ll do what I can. Peace, out.

    71. I donated to Anissa! She’s an amazing gal, as you are an amazing friend. Today’s my 30th birthday, and I decided that rather than be all dead inside like most days, I’d share some love. Somehow your story made my little grinch heart grow ten times in size.

    72. I read your blog for the first time tonight, and you made me laugh. I have a 7 month old baby with a serious dairy allergy, which means I can’t eat fucking chocolate, or cake, or any of the shit that makes life good, I have insomnia and an ear and chest infection, and the other day somebody who hadn’t seen me in a while looked me up and down and said, in hushed tones ‘Jesus. Is it…is it cancer?’ (oh man, you know you’re lookin smoking when people think you’re terminal. Who needs self esteem with friends like mine?)
Basically, I have very fucking few moments in my life right now where I crack a smile, and tonight you had me roaring with laughter (it hurt, it was worth it). Consider my $20 donation payment for services rendered.
I won’t give you my blog address because that’s really not why I did it, but I will donate $5 a day if you and your cat come and sit in my house and make me laugh. And a small baby. Because small babies are the best medicine, right? Right??

Hmm. Maybe not. Oh well. Better luck giving her away next time.

    73. Ten bucks via PayPal. I would’ve donated without the promise to pimp someone out; of course, what you’re doing by giving others the link to hand over some mulah is priceless. Bravo!!!

Glad to hear she is still with us – I donated 20 munnies to help! All the best wishes from a total stranger from another continent and please excuse my bad English. :3

      Take care! :3
