  1. I wish I’d left a more lyrical piece of my body in San Francisco that day I passed through. My large intestine, perhaps.

  2. This ain’t about San Francisco — it’s about the bobcat. Is it possible that your dad was leaving you an early Christmas present? (I’m remembering the Hi-Victor-Meet-The-Bobcat incident from your first book.)

  3. Here’s hoping that everything goes your way in San Francisco and the only numbness is from the Not-Texas cold. Buy a gorgeous scarf and find some Christmas lights in every town you visit. 🙂

  4. I would be “Furiously Happy” if I lived near where you are touring ! You are awesome ! Have fun and travel safe ! <3

  5. I’m proud of you for getting on the next leg of your tour. Hopefully you are past your ‘downtime’ & able to truly enjoy your tour. Remember, we are all fans, we all love you & we are all broken sometimes. we get it. i think a little time talking to the sea lions might help…..
and I could seriously use a little sunshine. Send some over, okay?

  6. San Francisco is my favorite city. Union Square in Dec. at night with all the holiday lights is truly magical. I wish I was there. Santa Cruz is cool too, especially Bookshop Santa Cruz. Enjoy!

  7. Enjoy San Francisco. I have an ex there, so, you know, I can never return. I keep seeing your picture in my newsfeed with friends who are able to get to the cities you’re visiting. Can’t get to those places either. It’s not that I have that many ex boyfriends. Just to clarify …

  8. I am SO EXCITED for tonight, Jenny! Can’t wait to see you again. We are planning to get there early but I can’t figure out how early is early enough. Should I have camped out overnight? Maybe I should head over there right now? I just don’t know!!

  9. I left my larynx here. It’s why I now live here. I had to get it back.
That being said, I’m super excited to see which taxidermied friend you brought with you this time around. Copernicus was great fun last time!

  10. I hope you don’t mind if I steal that picture and put it up on Facebook. I think it’s something my friends need to see.

  11. This is exactly what I’m dealing with right now. Your blog gives me strength. Thank you

  12. So true! Your quote, that is. So many people achieve “it”, whatever it is, and then realize the happiness it was supposed to bring isn’t there. I used to think it was just a trite saying but it’s not–happiness truly is inside us. And it can be more elusive for some than others. Wishing you a good trip–and a net to catch that elusive happiness.

  13. I like your quote today. I recently realized that I can be sad because everything is going perfectly. In fact I wrote about that same topic yesterday. Great minds think alike – except some of us have minds that are able to churn out a best seller while the rest of us screw around with our blogs.

  14. It’s great you’re in SF and it’s World AIDS Day. I hope you make a lot of people happy there with Furiously Happy and book signing 😀

  15. So close and yet so far!! I’m living and working in SF, but have other plans tonight! How the heck did I manage to book something over this!? Enjoy your day in the bay! (But don’t really go into the bay, it’s cold and wet and there might be sharks with laser beams.)

  16. So bummed that I will miss your Bay Area events (SF, Corte Madera). I have to be out of town. I will be there in spirit though. Knock ’em dead Jenny. You are the best.

  17. I hope you’re having fun up in the City today! Santa Cruz later this week will be fun too!

  18. When I found out you were coming to San Francisco a couple months ago, I was ecstatic. Even more so because today is my 30th birthday and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate making it thirty years, when there have been so many times I wished—and actively tried—not to make it. Unfortunately I’m in one of those places right now, and can barely make it from my bed to the couch, let alone going out to a place where there are sure to be tons of people and noise and excitement. Even the thought of it is too overwhelming.

In the unlikely case you read this comment, I just wanted to tell you that your writing has inspired me and brought me to tears from laughing uncontrollably. In fact, there are several pieces that I will read to anyone who will listen to me (and sometimes even if they won’t) because I find them so hysterical.

Anyhow, I guess I just wanted to say thank you for the smiles you’ve brought me, the laughter you’ve caused, and the strength you’ve shown. I wish more than anything I could be there tonight. Thanks for helping me make it to 30.

    Hi Jenny!
Yes, we rare old friends. You are always too drunk to remember me.Just to refresh your memory…
This is me, being Furiously Fucking Happy -getting my chemo port in yesterday. Laughing hysterically with my husband while waiting, reading your book. We actually got “Shusshed” by the nurse.,I have depression and anxiety disorders too. They have been hiding la…See More

  20. The flip side of your quote is also true.

Even when things aren’t going your way you can still be happy, though not always.

Mental illness fucks up your perceptions, so your moods can run independent of what’s actually going on in your life.

I think what I’ve learned, partially from experience, partially from your books & musings, & especially with the “Furiously Happy” mantra in mind, is that you need to be happy when you can, for whatever reason, & if there isn’t a reason you can make one up.

That can help buffer things for later when you feel no good for no real reason.

  21. Can I suggest a topic for a doodle, please? Something along the lines of “You don’t have to wait until your hands are shaking before you take the ativan” or “you don’t get brownie points for taking the least amount of meds you can get by with.” I’m sure as a NYT best-selling author you can word that better than I can. I need to print it upside down on a t-shirt so I can look down and read it and think “Damn! Jenny’s right again!”

  22. I would love to see how you do one of those drawings. Do you start in one corner or what? Do you have any idea where you’re going or is the finished piece a total surprise? How long do they take? Do you take an earlier one and add to it sometimes? I notice a lot of serpent-like creatures. Freud would have a field day analyzing those.

  23. Well, welcome to the SFBay Area. I’m out in the burbs of the east bay enjoying time with my son at the mall because all of a sudden, his pants don’t fit. So, we high-tailed it to the mall in search of new pants. Loved some one on one time with my soon to be teenager. Hope you had a good time and got to see the sights. Love the Bay Area !!

  24. Thank you, Jenny for being you. I was at the reading in San Francisco with tears in my eyes. It was such a treat to hear your voice after reading your books.

  25. That quote is perfection. I had all things going for me in high school and early college, yet still felt anxious and off. It would have been nice for someone to tell me that that’s ok, and may even be a form of “normal”…

  26. Thank you for coming to SF and sharing part of your life with us. You are truly an inspiration! Luckily my tears held out until I was home. I wish you the best of luck on the rest of the tour!

  27. In re: dog biscuit eating pharmacist

From personal experience, I can say that Milk Bones and the generic large dog biscuits that they used to sell at A&P taste like Ry-Krisps. Maybe he was just saving some money, if Ry-Krisps are more expensive than the particular brand of dog biscuit he was eating. They’re also less crumbly, so maybe he’s just a neat freak. He may also suffer from Species Disphoria Disorder and be a dog trapped in a man’s body and this is the only way he can express his true inner self at work.

P.S. for the sake of completeness, Bonz (the white part) taste kind of like banana. The brownish inner core tastes like liver. I know this because I used to say “Do I get a dog biscuit?” to the Math Department secretary whenever I did something like turn in grades or stuff and one day she called my bluff so I had to eat it. The Milk Bone eating was to freak out my friends, and the generic one was eaten to freak out the family dog.

P.P.S. Bonz are too hard to make enjoyable eating, unless you’re calling someone’s bluff.

    P.P.S.

  28. Please make a poster of today’s picture. I need it for my high school classroom. One of my students started to believe the lies in October – we lost him, but many more have recognized the lie and are getting treatment.

I’m getting my semi colon tattoo today, because kids need to know they’re not alone in this struggle.
