It’s Halloween Eve…what should I watch?

Y’all know I am a giant horror aficionado, and so Halloween is my jam. I’ve been watching horror movies all week…just letting my algorithm tell me what to watch next and it has been very hit-or-miss. So if you are also a lover of horror, please chime in on your faves. (Extra credit for psychological thrillers, twists, paranormal, gothic, creepy.)

Here’s what I’ve watched so far in the last week:

Trap (better than expected)

MaXXXine (An okay ending to the trilogy, but everything pales in comparison to the glory that is Pearl)

The Ritual (creepy folk horror…yep)

1922 (Hello, atmosphere)

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (why is this labeled as “horror”? This was not horror.)

MA (Worth it just for Octavia Spencer)

The Substance (Hailey and I saw this at a haunted movie theater and loved it.)

Late Night with the Devil (thumbs up)

Sissy (is it possible to have “comfort” horror shows? Because this is one of mine.)

The Others (possibly my favorite horror film. I rewatch it every year.)

Outside (A different take on the classic zombie movie. Mildly infuriating.)

Suggestions?

  1. I’d recommend “Let The Right One In,” which is the best vampire film ever made.

Also “Les Yeux Sans Visage” (“Eyes Without A Face”).

For gonzo fun, there’s “Cabin In The Woods.”

    Or old-school burn-your-brain double-feature of “Hellraiser” and “Hellraiser 2.”

Enjoy, and thank you for your ongoing sharing with all of us!

  2. “Wait Until Dark” with Audrey Hepburn & Alan Arkin.
I get chills just thinking about it.
It comes under the heading of ‘Psychological Horror’. Teeth-clenching horrific.

  3. Train to Busan, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Ghostwatch, Malignant, Hereditary…

  4. If you haven’t seen Hell House, this movie thoroughly creeped me out! It’s done in a documentary/video footage style and I think it’s because it seemed so real (also the clowns) that it got to me. It’s about a crew that takes over an abandoned hotel to turn it into a haunted house. There’s two more Hell House movies and I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch yet. The best zombie movie I’ve ever watched is Train to Busan. This one is about a 20/10 imo. A Quiet Place Day 1 was extremely intense. Bird Box was also intense. And of course my go to favs are The Purge movies. I’m staying with the creepy theme through the weekend so I’m going to add some from your list! Happy Halloween Eve!

  5. “The Unbinding” (A documentary, but definitely still folk horror.)

    “Resolution”

    “Anything for Jackson”

    “The Shrine”

“Race with the Devil” (An oldie but a goodie.)

  6. I loved Dead Silence.
Great horror movie about a haunted ventriloquist doll.

But I’m also a big fan of B-movies. Like Slither, eight legged freaks, snakes on a plane and any and all the critters movies 🙂

  7. I love Happy Death day and Happy death day 2U! They are old school slasher(like scream)/mixed with Groundhog Day. I highly recommend them for the scary and funny!

  8. Fresh (a few years old, don’t read anything ahead of time!).
Strange Darlings – this might still be in theatres.
    The Perfection.

  9. “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death.” I watched it almost 50 years ago, and I’ve got it saved on my DVR now, but haven’t had a chance to watch it again. My husband doesn’t share my enjoyment of scary movies and since we’re retired he’s.home.all.the.time. (Never having time to myself again scares me now.)

I remember “Let’s Scare…” as scaring me for days. My all-time favorite is The Uninvited with Ray Milland and Olivia Hussey, and the original The Haunting of Hill House movie, (1963?) not the remake or the series. The remake was ruined with special effects. The Netflix series was good, but while it borrowed names and some situations from the book, it wasn’t quite the same as the story.

Shirley Jackson wrote Hill House, and after my freshman college students read her “The Lottery,” I read excerpts from Hill House in my classes. It made some of them want to read it, but then I got an email from a student telling me I “was going to be judged for teaching about the occult.” What?? I don’t even believe in the occult, so I don’t know how I could teach about it. I emailed her back and told her I felt like my students were old enough to differentiate between fantasy and reality.

  10. Magic with Anthony Hopkins! Terrifying psychological thriller with a marionette that still haunts my dreams 40 years later

  11. And The Eyes of Laura Mars! Another terrifying psychological thriller from the 1980’s!

  12. Brightburn is more of a thriller but I loved it. Also, if you have Disney +, Werewolf By Night (black and white version) is spectacular. Really, one of the best properties they’ve made in horror.

  13. Pontypool – a great low key horror!
Woman of the Hour – not quite horror, but definitely creepy!
Strange Darling – one unexpected turn after another!

  14. In honor of Teri Garr’s passing, I humbly recommend adding in a comedy tribute to classic horror … ’tis the season for Young Frankenstein ❤️

  15. My comfort horror is The Prophecy. Superb cast and just the kind of horror I adore!
Christopher Walken chewing the scenery is transcendant.
He ramps it up even more in The Prophecy II.
Viggo Mortensen will also be one of my favorite takes on Satan forever.
By sequel III, we have lost much of the original cast, still have Walken, but gain Brad Dourif! Not as campy, but not bad either.
Apparently they made two more released in 2005 without even Walken. Haven’t seen them, so no idea.
Whatever you watch, enjoy yourself and escape the existential horror of am election year with the kind of horror where you can solve problems by cutting off a head or tearing out a heart!!

  16. The Orphanage (Spanish: El orfanato) is a 2007 Gothic supernatural horror film directed by J. A. Bayona in his directorial full-length debut. The film stars Belén Rueda as Laura, Fernando Cayo as her husband, Carlos, and Roger Príncep as their adopted son Simón. The plot centers on Laura, who returns to her childhood home, an orphanage. Laura plans to turn the house into a home for disabled children, but after an argument with Simón, he goes missing. The film is an international co-production film between Spain and Mexico.

  17. Don’t Look Now, with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. I saw it back in the 70s, and it gave me nightmares as well as hypnopompic hallucinations.

  18. Halloween III. Do not be fooled by the title; there is no Michael Myers to be found here, but this movie is seriously creepy and gets under your skin. Highly recommend!

  19. The Changeling with George C Scott from 1980. Classic spooky horror. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

  20. If you’re into weirdo animals-amok “horror”, I looooove the 2006 Kiwi movie “Black Sheep”. It’s about genetically modified ware-sheep. Very little CGI, and most of the real props/puppets were done by Weta Workshop when they finished with one(all?) of the LOTR movies. It’s pure gold.

  21. I watch The Shining and 1409 every year at this time. They go well with my October reading of Poe and Stephen King. Although, right now I am reading Rosemary’s Baby. So I guess I’m going to have to add that to the list to watch. Oh, and I’d also add The Exorcist. One of my all time favorites!

  22. My favorite scary movie is “Mama”. I re-watched the first “The Conjuring” this weekend. It’s better than I remembered.

  23. Any episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the original series. Curation of the cheesiest horror and sci fi films, esp. those from the 50’s. The audience is one human and 3 companions he built from parts, as they are forced to stay in space watching these films for a demented scientist. The comments from the 4 audience members are hysterical and clever.

  24. Thanks for reminding me of The Others! So good! I will be watching that one tonight

  25. I loved The Ritual -it was good! Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon is a real good one that none seems to know about. I had forgotten The Others (thanks!). Happy beer and candy night!
    -Butterpants

  26. “The Changeling” with George C Scott (not the Angelina Jolie movie) is my all time favorite scary movie!

  27. I want to put in a strong vote for Odd Thomas. It’s about a guy who can see ghosts. Not scary as much as that sort of “comfort horror” you mentioned, or you might also describe it as emotionally affective sort of horror. Truly awesome ghost story.

  28. I know you’ve probably seen Ready or Not but I rewatched it for my Horrorpalooza this year and it’s still great, a good rewatch.
Talk to Me is one of the best newer ones I’ve seen and I’ve heard/read Sting is great so I’ll be checking it out tonight or tomorrow.

  29. Not all that scary, but my favorite cheesy creature movie is the 1986 classic “Troll”. Fun fact: by sheer coincidence, the main character’s name is Harry Potter. So you can tell people that you technically watched the first ever Harry Potter movie. 🙂

  30. I always love the classics like The Shining and Silence of the Lambs, but the weirdest “scary” movie I’ve ever seen is Cabin Fever with Ryder Strong (yes, Sean from boy meets world). It bills itself as a scary movie but then you’re just like “what the heck is going on?!” It has some jump scares for sure but it’s mostly a wtf experience.

Actual favorite scary film: El Orpheonato by Guillermo del toro. So scary. So good.

  31. Teacup on peacock is series and very satisfying for the eerie, scared show

  32. Magic, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (more of a thriller), Alien, Burnt Offerings, It Follows

  33. i recently enjoyed the watchers. you do eventually get to see what the watchers are.

  34. Every October, for a very long time, I have done my own “31 Days of Horror”.
Been documenting them, on social media, for 8(?) years, now.
In the past few years, instead of random favorites, I have been doing themes.
    2021 was Universal Monsters
    2022 was Silent movies.
    Last year it was Godzilla.
    This year, all Asian Horror.
Classics such as “Kaidan”, and “Kuroneko”.
Cheesy ones, such as “Attack of the Mushroom People”, “Genocide”, and “Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell”.
And, modern classics, such as the Train to Busan trilogy.
Tonight is going to be the every so cheesy “The X From Outer Space”, and the grand finale is going to be a comedy double feature of “Hiruko the Goblin”, and “One Cut of the Dead”.
    I HIGHLY recommend ‘One Cut’.

  35. I like the 2006 movie “severance”. Horror with comedy thrown in.

I also vote for the 1976 young Jodie Foster movie “the little girl who lives down the lane”.

  36. The Fall of The House of Usher was amazing. Full disclosure, horror is not my jam. But this was SO good.

  37. Frailty. It has Bill Paxton, Powers Booth and a very young Mathew McConaughey. Amazing movie!!

  38. Nope. Jacob’s ladder. Silence of the Lambs. Mercy. Malevolent. The Nanny.

  39. Hands down, my absolute favorite is 1408. I watch it a few times a year, and at least once every October.

  40. “REPO! The Genetic Opera” is my yearly Halloween watch.
    “Bloody Mallory” is wonderfully ridiculous.
OH– and look up the 2006 New Zealand horror/comedy “Black Sheep.” Brilliantly baaaaaad.
    –TheBeck

  41. The Others is my jam. And The Exorcist is still the scariest movie ever made even though it’s 50 years old.

Crimson Peak and Only Lovers Left Alive are great Gothic Tom Hiddleston horrors. But for a psychological thriller, I cannot recommend Bad Samaritan enough. David Tennant at his most menacing. Robert Sheehan from Umbrella Academy as the poor guy who gets terrorized. Such a good movie.

  42. The Strangers and The Autopsy of Jane Doe… made a mistake of watching the latter by myself…

  43. Barbarian, if you haven’t already seen it. One of my absolute favorite horror movies from the last couple of years.

  44. Child’s Play is Brad Dourif at his best, and my all time favorite 80s slasher. Also, can’t beat the original Castle Freak. For campier B movie fun, Zombeavers or The Greasy Strangler. In a Violent Nature is this years best slasher revival (won Fangoria’s 2024 chainsaw award for best kill scene). Some other great picks: Splinter, When Evil Lurks, Night of the Hunted, Glorious, Pumpkinhead, Hereditary, The Devil’s Rejects, Quarantine, Mandy (Nic Cage’s best), Revenge, Session 9, The Devil’s Candy, Pet Semetary (80s version), Alien, & IT (90s version).

I’ve seen around 2000 horror movies, … these ones I love for sure, every time I watch them

  45. “Mirrormask”,originally written by Niel Gaiman. It’s a wonderful treat, that I watch every Halloween. =)

  46. Rider21: Yes the others is a masterpiece.
Dream house (Daniel Craig) is good not great but satisfying
    Room 1408 very good
Del Torros Devil’s backbone is effed up.
    Event horizon. Obviously.
    Not horror but psychological
    The game (Michael douglas)
    Coherence (surprisingly good)

Can you let us know which one you liked?

  47. I just watched Warm Bodies and now it’s a new favorite. Zombie Romeo and Juliet sort of.

Fall which is more just thriller.

Trick or Treat is my abfab!

  48. The Fly, with Jeff Goldblum, from 1986. He accidentally merges his own DNA with that of a fly and morphs and goes mad as his body becomes the insect. With Geena Davis watching it all. Creeeepy. A “body horror” movie. Want to know what a 6-foot tall human fly looks like? This is the movie for you.

  49. I’ve been watching Vincent Price horror movies for the past two weeks (The Pit and the Pendulum; the House of Usher; the Haunted Palace; the Tomb of Legeia). I love the hold horror movies and Vincent Price!
I’ve also been watching the old horror B movies hosted by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

Tonight, I think I’ll watch “The Old Dark House’ from 1932 and starring Boris Karloff.

  50. I don’t usually watch “Horror” films, but loved “Train to Busan.” If you want some camp with your horror, “Cabin in the Woods” is Joss Whedon at his finest.

  51. I’m going to try to list some dark horse Halloween horror flicks that (maybe?) you or others haven’t seen.. Happy Halloween!

I just stumbled upon Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and it’s an excellent multidimensional horror movie. It’s a psychological thriller that highlights the complexity of a dysfunctional family’s dynamics (think Grey Gardens) and is also a cautionary tale about the ruthlessness of Hollywood. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford bring their legendary screen queen finest. I was mezmorized by their performances-their off screen hatred for each other clearly seeped through their performances and elevated the film.

The Fog-It’s a superb (surprisingly underrated) John Carpenter flick. The dread just creeps over you throughout the whole film. It’s paranormal, with eighties greatness sprinkled in.

The ‘Burbs-it’s not scary, but is worth a mention because it is campy Halloween greatness. I have to watch this every Halloween because it’s 80’s perfection. Exasperated young Tom Hanks from the 80’s is my spirit animal.

They Live-it’s disturbing, bonkers, funny, and original. There is a fight scene that that is absolutely bananas. It’s not gory, but it’s the most ridiculously theatrical 6 minute plus scene ever-what makes it so great is that it’s so misplaced in the movie. It just comes out of no where.

The fight scene is so iconic that South Park recreated the fight scene frame by frame years back in their show. John Carpenter just said, fuck it, and thanks to him we have this bonkers movie.

Nope-it’s unexpected, disturbing alien flick that happens to also be a really great movie, horror or no. Great writing, great special effects.

Prey-It’s a clever and thrilling. You’re on the edge of your seat the whole time rooting for the main character. It’s smartly written-again, an alien flick because aliens are freaking scary. It’s apart of the Predator movies, and no you do not have to see the others Predator movies to understand this one.

2001 a Space Odyssey-it’s a classic for a reason. Everything outer space and aliens to me is terrifying. It’s also super relevant movie now with our advances in AI, and for me the terrifying possibilities of space/other life. It won’t leave you for days.

No One Will Save You-It’s an original extraterrestrial story that has dramatic depth to it and twists you don’t see coming. I also love the retro feel to the main character as I love retro style.

Mandy-I upvote this movie from someone else, although the themes are incredibly adult, dark and violent. Be warned. Nick Cage at his premium best though and the movie itself is incredibly well done.

  52. Blood Quantum
A First Nations (Indigenous Canadians) take on the classic Zombie movie.

  53. I can’t believe no one has recommended Barbarian yet. A movie that is not at all what you’d expect. The title is very misleading, I think. . .but the movie is a wild ride. My only suggestion, stick with it, because the buildup to all the crazy twists takes a while. Also, Cabin in the Woods for the premise (brilliant) and the elevator scene.

  54. It’s an old one, but I seem to remember one called phantasm? Perhaps not the correct spelling but I remember it was scary! A flying silver orb equipped with spikes and maybe a drill.

  55. This retro vibe is amazing! Loving the mix of psychological thrillers, folk horror, and classic ghost stories in your lineup. Totally agree on The Others—it’s an annual must-watch for me too. You might also enjoy Hereditary for its dark, unsettling atmosphere, or The Witch if you’re into atmospheric horror with a gothic feel. And if you’re in for a twisty psychological thriller, check out The Invitation—it’s a slow burn but incredibly creepy!

  56. Most of these, if not all, have been mentioned so I’ll just reiterate: Hereditary, Midsommer, The Ritual, Gaia, Strange Darling, Barbarian, Brightburn, Blink Twice, Get Out, The Feast, The Menu, Boys From County Hell, Last Straw, Revenge. And an excellent horror series that I don’t understand why not more people know about: Lovecraft Country.

  57. Great horror movie picks! I’m a huge fan of psychological thrillers and atmospheric horror myself. I’d recommend checking out The Babadook if you haven’t already. It’s a truly terrifying and thought-provoking film.

Have you seen any of the Halloween movies, especially the original 1978 one? It’s a classic for a reason. Also, Hereditary is a fantastic modern horror film that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Let me know what you think of these suggestions!

  58. I recommend Abigail it’s a vampier movie that was really well done. It’s newish and honestly is just cool. Not so much creepy or anything. But it’s a good one.
