Ooh…what if it’s a crow?

I’ve been adding to this little fairy hole for awhile…

…and I’d like to think it’s the little girl next door leaving little gifts but it’s entirely possible that some other adult has found the hole and thinks that a kid made it and is just humoring them and I’m doing the same thing and technically it’s just too grown-ass people playing with toys with each other.

Still…I’ll take it.

  1. I would be tempted to add some tiny furniture cause fairies have to sit somewhere.

  2. People build fairy houses in the woods where we vacation in Maine and it’s wonderful.

  3. Awesome! You might want to add a protective edging if that area gets mown in the spring. You could use a log or a black plastic edging and paint a picket fence on the inside…

  4. Crows will bring you presents if you leave them peanuts or other food they like. They will learn who you are and recognize you and talk to you in crow language. They are very smart and they will find little toys, ribbons, berries, shells, etc to leave you. I once watched a show on PBS or National Geographic Channel that proved how smart they are and they have problem solving abilities and object permanence and other intelligence that makes them as least as smart as octopus or smarter than some dogs.
So you may be making a new friend.
Or a child is really enjoying your fairy house, which I think the child in all of us can appreciate a fairy house.

  5. I would have completely flipped out over that as a kid. And my 6 year old daughter would completely flip out now.

Won’t you be my neighbor Jenny?

  6. Like when two people meowing at each other from different rooms each think it’s the cat…

  7. I so want it the be crows. I’ve been feeding my local murder and they are just so sweet and caring, but very shy. I could so see a crow participating, but too shy to do it while being seen.

  9. I have a little fairy house in a stump in front of my house, too! I never find anything new there, but the neighborhood kids like to come by and peek at it….and the other strange and wonderful things I have placed for fun. I really DO have a log with eyes, tied to a pole with a sign that says “beware of Log”, a squirrel rappelling down my porch…rubber duckies in the birdbath…and that’s just for starters. Yes, I’m a grown woman who needs whimsey in her life.

  10. I’m redoing our front into a rose garden/memorial garden for the pets. I also plan to have little fairy and gnome things around the garden because that’s me. I’m still waiting on our cherry tree to grow back. My husband pruned it back to far.

  11. Right, so back in 2014, I was living with my sister in the months before getting married and moving to another state where my now-husband was employed. And I found these little gnomes on planter stakes at Target in four different colors. Now my sister hates gnomes for whatever reason, so I was like, “I’m going to buy these little guys and hide them in her garden. It’ll be hilarious.”

And then two weeks or so go by, and she still hasn’t found the gnomes, so when I’m at Target again I buy four more for a total of eight and hide those in the garden also. And wait. Surely she’ll find them and it’ll be hilarious.

Another three or four weeks go by, and I’m making coffee before work when she catches me in the kitchen. It’s early, I’m mostly asleep, and she says, “We have to talk.”

Well, that was ominous, and I blink at her and ask her what about. She says, “Do you know anything about… the gnomes?”

At which point I fell off my stool laughing instead of pretending I did not.

And she was furious, because she was afraid that the neighbors were putting a gnome hex on her.

“Gnome hexes aren’t a thing,” I tried to explain to her. But she seemed convinced they were. Then she asked me how many gnomes I’d hidden. “How many gnomes did you find?” I asked her, and then I was afraid she would hit me. She did not.

So then my dad accidentally caused Gnomaggeddon with the lawnmower. But this was after I’d gotten married and moved, so I wasn’t in a position to easily replace the gnomes. Nonetheless, I went to Target and found them again in a fifth color! I shipped them to a friend who still lived nearby my sister and she planted them in the yard for me.

Then I called Dad. Warned him not to cause another gnomepocalypse with the mower. Swore him to secrecy. Dad was giddy. “Can I tell Mom?” he asked. “Yes,” I said, “but swear her to secrecy too.” He loved it.

My sister was furious that I’d managed to get gnomes into her yard from out of state. And everyone else in on the gnomespiracy thought it was hilarious. Because it objectively is.

Anyway, there was a period of peace where no new gnomes were added. Then she got engaged just before Christmas of 2021. I sent a pair of bridal gnomes to my Mom, and she and Dad snuck into my sister’s house and planted them there along with a Christmas tree. Her fiance learned of the gnomespiracy and thought it was delightful, and my sister continued to be mad.

Fingers crossed that they have a baby, because I’ve got plans for gnome onsies!

    (Love this. ~ Jenny)

  12. Ooh… I wish some other grown up would play secret fairy house with me! (It actually sounds way more normal than playing with the neighborhood kids 🙂

  13. Love it! Can you please post a stool image of your fairy house?

Tonight, I picked up a unicorn felt mask from Nextdoor. It will bless my hard hat for a week before I gift it to my favorite toddler 🙂

  14. I am SHOCKED that your first reaction was not that ACTUAL FAIRIES were helping to decorate the clearly ideal location for a vacation home.

  15. This post reminds me of one time my husband and I were having an overnighter at our desert cabin. We hadn’t been there for awhile and unbeknownst to us, pack rats had made their nest under the old stove. We left all of our stuff inside, and decided to sleep in our sleeping bags out on the deck area.
Next morning, we discovered all of our money (mostly $20 bills) was gone. After much searching, we eventually found the rats had wallpapered their nest with our money. We almost wanted to leave the money there for the rats, but, you know, $20 bills – and we’re not rich.
