Hello and welcome to the FIFTEENTH ANNUAL James Garfield Miracle! (HOW??)

“What is the James Garfield Miracle?” you may be asking.

You must be new here. HELLO AND WELCOME.

15 years ago I walked into an estate sale and fell in love with an ancient taxidermied boars head that seemed so damn happy to see me.

I did not buy him and spent a week in light mourning. Then the next week A MIRACLE HAPPENED and James Garfield came into my life forever. (He’s looking at me right now, in fact and he is still magnificent.)

But Victor wasn’t completely thrilled that we’d spent $90 on a literal Christmas miracle of mangey fur and missing teeth so I decided that I’d make holiday cards of James Garfield to make up for it and if I sold a couple dozen it’d be like James Garfield was making us money.

But then everyone went crazy and James Garfield made more that week than I did in my actual job and so I decided that I’d take all the money James Garfield made and use it to give presents to the kids of people who were struggling that year because I have been there in the past myself. And I bought gifts for the first 30 something people and then I ran out of money but then suddenly everyone in the comments were like, “I WANT TO HELP A STRANGER IN NEED! LET ME BUY A GIFT FOR SOMEONE” and that’s how this suddenly became 15 years of a strange community project of strangers helping strangers anonymously and it’s pretty damn amazing.

Over the years we’ve had many different iterations of the James Garfield Miracle and the only real downside is that occassionally a scammer would slip in and ask for stuff for themselves, so a few years ago we decided to just give out teddy bears. Why? Because everyone loves teddy bears (hell, I love teddy bears) and if someone is going to go to the trouble to make an entire wishlist account for a teddy bear they definitely need one.

So this year I am sending out 100+ teddy bears to kids right here. 

That’s it. Just sweet, snuggly teddy bears. Well, not just teddy bears because the teddy bears have eyes that babies can swallow (stop swallowing eyes, weird babies) so I’m also adding a few other stuffed animals you can choose from if you have an eye-devouring baby or your child hates bears or Amazon sells out of teddy bears. 

But that’s it. Simple. Easy. Not perfect because in a perfect world everyone would get everything they need, but I’d like to imagine that even people who may be disappointed that we’re just doing stuffed animals will at least be happy imagining all the kids finding unexpected fluffy new stuffed animals in their arms this holiday. It makes me smile, at least. 

So, if you are struggling this year and you need help getting your child a present for Christmas/Hanukkah/winter solstice/whateveryoucelebrate then I am ready to Santa Claus it up and drop one lovely plushie at your doorstep. And I will walk you through how to get one anonymously.

Currently these are all around $10-$20 each but Amazon can be wonky about changing up the prices when things start to run low so if I see that happening I’ll come back here to add other choices to choose from to replace any that sell out or suddenly skyrocket in price from $20 to $180. (Wtf, Amazon?) If I haven’t bought you a stuffy it’s probably because they sold out, jacked up the price, or you forgot to add your address so just come back and try again. 

(Also, I use a lot of the profits I make on ads and stuff to buy toys for kids, and all of the royalties from the 2025 Bloggess Calendar go to this as well, so that means that if you’ve even clicked on a link this year or bought an ad or a book, then you are the reason why I’m going to be able to buy toys for at least 100 kids this year.  I’m so grateful.  Thank you!)

The wishlists should be posted in the comments so (as always) if you want to buy a present for a stranger you totally can.  Or you can donate to Project Night Night, an amazing organization that provides a tote bag, book, stuffed animal and security blanket to displaced kids throughout the year.  They are FANTASTIC and they have more requests than they can fill so I cannot recommend them enough. In fact, this afternoon I donated $1000 to them in your name. WHOOP!

SO…if you want in on this you have to read all the directions and stick to the rules or otherwise you will be set on fire and pushed out a moving plane.  Or maybe I’ll just delete your comment and look at you with that disappointed look your mom gives you when she knows you’re trying but are still fucking up.  One of those.  Here are the rules:

IF YOU WANT TO GIVE:

Okay, how do I do this?

You are my special angel.  Just look in the comments and find someone who has an unfilled Wishlist. I’m going to fill least 150 stuffed animal wishes but there are always more than I can handle.  (If there’s nothing on their list when you click it it means their toy was already bought- yay!)  Buy their present and make sure when you check out that you select their shipping address instead of defaulting to yours.  (It won’t give you their full address but it’ll tell you the town you’re shipping it to so you can compare it to their comment to make sure you have the right person.)  If you try to fill a wishlist but it doesn’t give you a shipping address to choose that means the person didn’t assign a shipping address to their list so just delete their present out of your cart and go on to the next wishlist.  If it says “these are duplicates.  Someone else may have already bought this” when you try to check out then someone else has already bought that stuff so delete it and try another one. I’ll update the comments as I can to note which ones have been filled but it can get a bit backlogged when I’m in the car or sleeping. 🙂 Please do not fill any wishlists that don’t say the city the person lives in the comments, or any wishlists where the person doesn’t stick to the rules, please. (This is one way we make sure that people are who they say they are while still giving them anonymity.) 

But what if I don’t live in America?

Check the comments because we often have Canadians and others outside the US who need help and I can’t fill those lists because shipping kills me, so if you want to adopt a family this is a great way to do it.

IF YOU NEED HELP:

You are my special angel.  Here are the things you have to know and if you do them wrong you’ll get deleted so read carefully, okay?:   You have to make a BRAND NEW wishlist today, you can only choose one stuffed animal per child to put on your wishlist, and it has to be one of the ones above. I’ll walk you through it below. Then just come to this post and leave a comment telling us the city and State you’re in (this location has to match what you have on your wishlist), how many kids you have, and a link to your wishlist.  Do not make multiple wish lists.  Just make one.  One of the most important things (people do this wrong every year so PLEASE do this part right) is that you have to assign a shipping address for this specific brand new wishlist.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve done it before or think it’s on your profile. You have to do it for this new wishlist specifically today or it won’t work. I’ll give you the details on setting up the wishlist below.

What if I want to make wish lists to surprise other people who I think need help?

Nope.  Because then we end up sending multiple things to the same people. But you can totally encourage them to go online and make their own. This is for anyone struggling to get a toy for their child this holiday (and yes, that totally includes teens and adult children with special needs).

I’ve never done this before.  How do I make a wishlist?

It’s pretty quick and easy if you follow the formula.  I’ll walk you through step by step:

On Amazon, click on “Accounts & Lists” (on the top right), choose “lists” and then on “Create a list”.

Name it “James Garfield 2024” then click “create”. This will give you a blank private wishlist with nothing on it. 

On the right you’ll see something that says “…More“.  Click on that and choose “Manage list.”  Change “private” to “PUBLIC” so we can see it. In the “description” part just put how many kids your list is for.  YOU MUST ADD YOUR ADDRESS FOR THIS SPECIFIC LIST so click on the drop-down for the shipping address and change it from “none” to your address. PLEASE DON’T SKIP THIS PART.  Please make sure that the checkboxes “keep purchased items on your list” and “don’t spoil my surprises” are NOT checked.  Now go back and double-check every single thing in this paragraph. Is it all good? Awesome! Click “Save changes”. 

Now just go pick one of the above stuffed lovies for your kiddo.  When you have the one you want click on the “Add to list” drop down arrow on the right (it’s under where the price is) and then select your “James Garfield 2024” list.  Click “view your list” to make sure it’s added. If everything is right you should have your stuffed animal(s) on the wishlist page and when you click on the “…more” button it should say that your wishlist is public and your address should show up in the “…more” box and double check that “don’t spoil my surprises” and “keep purchased items on your list” ARE NOT checked. (People will see the city and state you are in, but your last name and the rest of your address is hidden.)

If you have another kid just go back to the list and pick a present for them and add it to the same list.

Copy the link to your wishlist. Now you go to the comments below and leave a comment saying how many kids you have, what city and state you are in, and a paste in the link to your wishlist.  That’s it!

So for example, I would say, “Hi.  I live in San Antonio Texas, and I have one kid who would love a kitty. Here’s my list:  https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/VH9X1VPXAPA8/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_2

Thanks!”

Now…to go shopping.  Happy James Garfield Day!

PS.  Please please please double check before you hit the submit button that you have assigned a shipping address to your wishlist, that it’s “public” and that your comment has a link to your wishlist, the city and state you live it and the number of kids you have. Love!

PPS. This is one of my favorite things to do each year but it isn’t perfect. Every year some boxes go missing. Some get delivered after Christmas. Miscommunications happen. But I’d rather try to do something small and wonderful even if it isn’t perfect. Thank you to every single person who asks for help, to every single person to who helps and especially to those who have done both. Every year we have people who’ve been helped before who are so happy to help this year, or people who’ve helped before but now need help themselves. I know what it feels like to be in both of those places and I’m wishing love and light to every single person who reads this.

PPPS. When you choose something for your wishlist make sure it still says “delivers before xmas” because some of the things may sell out and not restock in time. 🙂 As of the time I’m writing this all the stuffed animals arrive before xmas but if they start to sell out and have to restock it might cause your stuff to come in later.

  8. So sorry to rain on anyone’s parade but Amazon workers are probably going on strike before the holidays to protest horrible work conditions.
    So maybe things may not get to their intended household by Christmas or Hanukkah or whatever other holiday you celebrate in December or January like Three Kings Day or Little Christmas or Orthodox Christmas or Kwanzaa.
    So maybe there’s a way that the intended family can get IOUs for their gift from the elves, fairies or other magical creatures who work behind the scenes at magical childhood land?
    I hope Amazon comes to their senses and uses some of our gazillions of dollars we spend on their website to help their workers have a magical wish come true for better working conditions.

  9. Hi 👋🏻. I live in Hope, AR and we have taken in two kiddos from a family at church to keep the siblings together, instead of letting them go into the system, so that gives us a total of six beautiful kids from 10 months to 17 years old this Christmas!
    I thought of James Garfield to help us out, as we’d gotten help on here back in 2017 when my husband had lost his job. I’m disappointed to find we can’t give our own list any longer, as my 17 year old boy will not appreciate a stuffy 😂 but I think the tween girls will think they’re cute, and obviously the littles will love them! I’m sad that people ruined this project that was meant to help people when they need it, but I’m thankful you found a way to keep going so everyone has something to unwrap Christmas morning 💗Lord bless you and all who are helping be Christmas angels 💖

    Gigantic twice-blended Twin Cities family – bursting at the seams and always a tight budget, but thank goodness for the library to help us keep this crew entertained and educated! I’m Erica! Kids: 6 littles, 6 medium-bigs, and 1 big (teen).

    I put plushies on the list for all of our kids including the teenager even though he’s no longer a believer, but still feels good being included in the fun.   92. Hi! I’m Dana. I live in North Canton, Ohio. This is absolutely the sweetest tradition I’ve seen in a long time, and I’d love to gift some some day. This year though, things have been rough. I have 5 kids (19,16,14,13,12) but the younger 3 (12boy, 13girl and 14girl) are the ones I’m requesting for. My 14yr old has dev/intellectual disabilities, but was just diagnosed with epilepsy in Feb that medication is unable to control. She is scheduled for brain surgery (removal of half of the right hemisphere) in January. Stuffies are her absolute fav thing!

    I have one more request and if it can’t be filled, I understand. When I added the warm up stuffie to my list, a suggestion popped up for an axolotl that you can also use as a heating pad. My 15 year old is discovering the “joys” of that time for women and LOVES axolotls. I know it is not on the approved list, so I understand if it is not allowed.   117. Hi my name is Amanda and I am a mom of 6 living in Taylor, PA…

    Life just has been extremely difficult. Their father was seriously injured at work and has had two back surgeries since the accident and he also had a heart attack. He most likely won’t be able to return to work so I don’t know what the future looks like for us. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and started an insulin pump a few months ago. I am finally getting it under control and have been applying for jobs but right now no one seems to want to hire me. I was a stay at home mom for years. Our second oldest was born with severe heart defects and our youngest daughter was diagnosed with level 3 autism and adhd and for the longest time things were extremely rough. Things finally started improving with my kids and next thing I know I am extremely ill and my other half is injured at work. It is overwhelming. Thank you Jenny for doing this.

  170. Hi my name is Cody. I’ve recently just took in my son Tyler. It’s a bit of a long story so I’ll try to make this short. Tyler is 17 years old. He just moved in with me straight out of rehab and he is doing great and I’m so proud of him, especially since he starts his first job after the holidays! This is my first Christmas with him since he was a little child because of drama that has happened in the past with his mother and I really wanted to make this special but I missed a few weeks of work due to being sick. He’s only asked for things he needs and I feel bad that I can’t even get those things for him. It’s a week til Christmas and I have yet to get him anything. But I’m sure he will understand and I can make up for it sometime in the future. I’m just glad I have this opportunity to try and get him this stuffed animal thing.   228. Hello, my name is Kasey. I don’t know what to do here so I’m going to try my best. I am a newly single mom of 3, soon to be 4. I have 16 year old Jack, 10 year old Noah, and 3 year old Bella and have another little girl due any day now and her name will be Evie. I recently just got out of an almost 11 year abusive relationship. That I’ve been trying to get out of for 2 years now, and I finally did it. It took him hospitalizing me but I’m out and me and the baby and my other children are okay. It’s hard, really hard right now. Not only on me but my children too. I had to move about 3 states away and basically start over. Now I live with my mom and it’s not necessarily the easiest right now, but it’s a roof over my children’s heads and that I’m grateful for. I can’t work at the moment because I’m due any day now. I asked around for help but I found nothing. I was too late for everything. Someone led me here, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

    Jack-16: My oldest. A huge help. Does everything I ask and more. He doesn’t have to he just does. Wants to work but I tell him school is more important at the moment. It’s his senior year and he’s too smart! He’s simple. Didn’t really ask for much. I guess because he knows there’s not much I can do right now.

    Noah-10: My baby boy. He’s is autistic but is so very smart. He loves fidget toys and nerf guns. He wears a size 10 in clothes and 4 in shoes. But he’s not really picky. His birthday is the day after Christmas on the 26th.

    Bella-3: The sassiest little girl ever. And she’s all about Bluey.. well Bingo. She’s a Mama’s girl hands down. Loves to color.

    I’m in the midwest and work with adolescent students. As everyone’s probably aware, LGBTQ+ students have unfortunately been under attack, and our trans students are especially feeling it. One way to help is to minimize their discomfort and help them deal with bodily functions that can distract from their learning. I made a wishlist to help stock our school with gender neutral period underwear so our students can focus better on their studies and friendships and being future world shakers and change makers.     Menstruation at school can be anxiety producing for any student, but exponentially so for our trans boys and non-binary students, especially for those whose families don’t have the ability to purchase gender confirming products. These gender neutral period underwear allow our struggling students to focus on their studies instead of anxiety about how to contain the blood in a way that doesn’t cause them dysphoria as internal blood catching products often do. They will be available to any menstruating students in need of external blood-catching who request them, and particularly would help our LGBTQ+ students (we have had students specifically ask for something like this). We currently only have tampons and pads available and I want to change that.

I have 16 year old Jack, 10 year old Noah, and 3 year old Bella and have another little girl due any day now and her name will be Evie. I recently just got out of an almost 11 year abusive relationship. That I’ve been trying to get out of for 2 years now, and I finally did it. It took him hospitalizing me but I’m out and me and the baby and my other children are okay. It’s hard, really hard right now. Not only on me but my children too. I had to move about 3 states away and basically start over. Now I live with my mom and it’s not necessarily the easiest right now, but it’s a roof over my children’s heads and that I’m grateful for. I can’t work at the moment because I’m due any day now. I asked around for help but I found nothing. I was too late for everything. Someone led me here, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

    Jack-16: My oldest. A huge help. Does everything I ask and more. He doesn’t have to he just does. Wants to work but I tell him school is more important at the moment. It’s his senior year and he’s too smart! He’s simple. Didn’t really ask for much. I guess because he knows there’s not much I can do right now.

    Noah-10: My baby boy. He’s is autistic but is so very smart. He loves fidget toys and nerf guns. He wears a size 10 in clothes and 4 in shoes. But he’s not really picky. His birthday is the day after Christmas on the 26th.

    Bella-3: The sassiest little girl ever. And she’s all about Bluey.. well Bingo. She’s a Mama’s girl hands down. Loves to color.

    Hi Jenny and James Garfield Miracle Makers! First off, YOU. ARE. AMAZING!!!!!! I am SO, SO, SO excited that our school will now have period supplies available that will minimize stress instead of being a source of distress to our most vulnerable students. This is such a bright light of hope to me, that we can add something positive for these kids when there have been so many recent setbacks breaking our hearts. 

    SECOND, if you are one of those beautiful angels who ordered something from our list, please if you can, let me know when it says it will be delivered. A delivery came in yesterday morning (it made me cry the sweetest tears of joy right there in the hallway in the middle of the school day!) and then I realized with dismay that OH NO, THE DELIVERY ADDRESS IS THIS SCHOOL AND WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS FOR WINTER BREAK. Ack! When I set up the list, I made sure to check the “no Saturday or Sunday deliveries” boxes, but in my brain fog, completely did not even realize that I had no idea how delivery would work from now through January 6th when we return from break. 

    So I don’t know if Amazon will leave the packages outside of the school’s doors or if they will mark them as undeliverable/return to sender and cancel the order.   287. Is there any chance that someone might be able to help with a warm snowsuit and warm boots? We are really struggling hard this year and live where it’s so very cold.

    I have one child, a high needs very active 12 year old autistic son who hit his growth spurt this year and is a full teenager size, the size of his teachers, but with sensory and accessibility needs that make finding warm gear really tricky. He can’t handle separate outerwear but he can get himself into a snowsuit. But since he outgrew his old snowsuit, he doesn’t have one now because I can’t afford a snowsuit for him. For boots, he can’t tie laces so needs the boots that are both very warm (can’t handle thick socks especially as their seams are painful to him) and that pull on.

    He loves neon colors and any shade of green. He needs warm gloves too (not mittens) and we’ve had success with Head gloves (not with touchscreen access, just regular kid playing gloves in a very big size) so I will try to add those to the list as well.

    This is all I could ever want for the holidays, for my child to be able to go play outside and be warm and safe from frostbite and I am humbling thanking anyone who can help me make this possible.   320. This community is so AWESOME! I’m an educator and one of my elementary school aged students who is low income came to me and asked for help to get their mom a gift. They are in the greater DC area.

    The student and I talked a lot about other ways to show love and appreciation (coupons for hugs, a drawing, being a good listener, etc.) But they want a tangible gift for their mom. I wish I could do it all – but I’m zapped (but will make sure they are taken care of next year.)

    I desperately need a warm wintercoat, cardigan, gloves, scarf so I can layer. I’ve put up ecards of various denominations since it’s the safest way.

    Two sweaters are on the way to me and I can’t wait 🤗 . DV shelters are a depressing place. No christmas tree so as not to offend anyone. When I suggested that I’ll gladly decorate it with pens and Isis images, which is why we’re here with nothing to begin with, staff did not think it was funny or did not get it.

    I’m late to this but I’m hoping there’s still some magic left. I’m a single parent in Wisconsin and working a full time job and a part time job to make ends meet with the basic necessities, and still visit the food shelf to keep our family fed, There’s nothing left over after necessary bills. I’ve got two kind-hearted nerdy middle school boys who struggle socially, who are really into D&D (Dungeons and Dragons), and want to get a D&D club going at school. I love that, I think it’ll help them make strong friendships with other kids who share their interests which would be good for their mental health. They want anything D&D related for Christmas, especially the guidebooks and DM book so the older of the two can lead the group and run the game, otherwise the club can’t exist. If anyone is able to send some of the books their way for the holidays, I’d love to see a smile on their faces that they could get their club going. They added some extras too that would make the game-creating and game-running easier for the older one to DM (and fun nerdy socks, because…teens?). This is their list with their D&D requests.   336. To #325 – OMG, I love your boys! D&D was my salvation as a nerdy spectrum kid and my best social place in high school and college. I love that they want to start a club and bring in the other nerdy teens to a safe place to grow their social circle! I don’t have much to spare myself these days, but if I have enough in my paycheck on Friday, I might be able to get them one of the handbooks they’ll need or maybe the maps for planning his first campaign.     Also thank you for the heads up! I stopped by yesterday and there were 2 packages on the ground outside the school door! I’m not sure if it was all of what you ordered though because no size Mediums have been arrived and you mentioned ordering one of each size. Would you be able to check your order status and see if it says the size M was delivered or had a problem with delivery?

    Of the items that I can see have been purchased on the list, the only things that have not been delivered are: 1 size Small, 2 size Medium, and 1 size XL

    So those might have been marked as undeliverable since the school building is closed for break, or maybe they just haven’t gone out for delivery yet?
