Yesterday was shitty so today we’re doing cat pictures. Go fuck yourself, yesterday.

Question:  What’s the difference between kids during summer vacation and kittens at any time?

hunter bored

It’s not a riddle.  I just really want to know.

PS.  Yes, that is Hunter S. Thomcat when he was still Hunter S. Thomkitten.  He was very demanding.  He still is, but now when he flops down on my neck in the middle of the night it’s less of a sweet nuzzle and more like a ninja has karate-chopped my jugular.  And the ninja wants food.  And some snugglin’.  And he’s confused about why I won’t wake up because he doesn’t understand that cats and people are always in different time zones.

PPS.  Cat pictures and happy songs.  This is what I need today.  Maybe you do too.  So here are two that I’m listening too today.  You might hate them and that’s okay.  Feel free to share your favorite happy song or cat picture or whatever makes you smile in spite of yourself.

  1. Every morning my cat demands that I pet her while she grinds her head into my shoes. She gets very irate when I go to the restroom first.

  2. Cat pictures and giggling babies. Those are very good today.

Also, turning off the TV because everything they are showing on it makes me sad today.

I think today should be all about snorgeling those you love. Your kids, mate, kitties, doggies, whatever it is.

    Love fiercely.

  3. When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
    With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
I will watch cat videos, and then my state,
(Like to the lark at break of day arising
    From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For watching wack-a-kitten such joy brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

  4. I’d never heard it before, but that song is SO AWESOME! Thanks so much for posting it, it’s making me so very, very happy right now. <3

  5. I adore that Mary Lambert song and have been playing it quite a bit.

Honestly, I’d probably adore any song with the lyric “I love my butt,” though.

  6. Yesterday was pretty shitty. I was just telling my boss what a weepy mess I was. I cried… At Master Chef. Thanks for the prechus pictures of Hunter.

  7. This morning, I woke up to my little black cat curled up in my arms, his head pressed against my chest. As I was dreaming prior to waking up, I groggily thought, “This is too furry to be a martini.” Hahaha.

    Love Hunter S. Thomcat.

  8. I submit my 1 year old daughter learning how to high five yesterday to brighten spirits this morning. She brought joy to our lives yesterday.

  9. Love those songs. Thanks for sharing. And sorry yesterday was shitty. One of my happy songs is “That Thing You Do” from the old 90s movie with Tom Hanks. Caution: it WILL get stuck in your head.

  10. Finding Nemo. It’s my anti-depression “drug.” The day I knew I was going to marry my husband was a day when my anxiety was really, really bad and I was losing my mind and for the life of me, I could NOT find my copy of the movie (yes, I realize the irony in the fact that I, too, lost Nemo). We had been texting, I had given up in despair and was trying to settle on something else to distract me/cheer me up, when he buzzes my apartment door. He’d gotten me another copy, and even labelled it “Emergency Anti-Depressant.” It was a lifesaver, considering I only found my copy of the movie when I was moving out of that apartment and into the first one we shared. It was in the back of my closet of all places. Who knew.

  11. Hunter S. Thomecat looks like he doesn’t have front paws in the first picture. It makes him look a bit like a velociraptor.

  12. wonderful antidote. thank you. if i could work out how, i’d send you an adorable picture of one of my cats as a kitten, in return. i promise he was objectively adorable. i’m not just saying that because he was mine…

  13. I saw a great Tweet saying that yesterday’s Twitter was like the biggest, saddest group hug ever. Let’s have a dance party today.

  14. THANK YOU for being you. You offer more support than you know.
I ALWAYS avoid tv… Let’s hear it for netflix!
Pinterest always has great cat pics. My personal favorite distraction is anything involving auto-correct fails. Oh, and the Bat Dog texts.

  15. Happy song = Light of a Clear Blue Morning by Dolly Parton. Because depression is an asshole …

  16. Seriously fuck yourself, yesterday! And all the people who speak of it as if they understand. Today, let us eat cats! Wait, what?

  17. No cats – but I am a sucker for horrible puns. Hope these brighten someone’s day://www.buzzfeed.com/keenan/35-terrible-puns-to-brighten-your-day

  18. Thanks for the kitten pics. 3 different people from my high school were killed in separate incidents in the last 2-3 weeks (one an off-duty cop so it’s on the news a lot). And hearing about Robin Williams last night made my jaw drop. And the racecar driver the day before (I refused to watch, but the story was horrifying enough). I wasn’t close to any of them but it still feels surreal.
Screw you, terrible drivers. Screw you, Depression. Screw you, bad luck. Screw you, news agencies making me relive the shock.

  19. So grateful to you for posting happy things today. Really grateful for knowing through the comments that others feel the same. Happy thoughts, friends, happy thoughts!

  20. Oh and two people on Facebook (again, not very close), had relatives die in the last two days. So strange that it seems all at once.

  21. My husband gave our Italian Greyhound a bath in our teenage son’s Old Spice Swagger bodywash last night. Now, we’ve got a goofy, wiggly, hyper little dog who smells like a kid on Prom night. That thought makes me laugh, so that’s what I’m thinking of today – Vinnie Swagger.

  22. I’m so happy you put All About the Bass in here!! I was going to recommend it. My daughter downloaded it, and that is how I first heard it. She was being called fat in SECOND GRADE (now going into 6th)! I worry about her constantly, but things like this song make me hopeful!! By the way, she loves Dr. Who, also!

  23. Thank you for this. Yesterday brought out some triggers for me as well. I needed some happy thoughts.

  24. Omgosh we have been listening Mehgan Trainor most of the morning here 🙂 great happy song!

  25. When I am through with something, parody of Let It Go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DlZdZYLCfU

When everyone seems to be telling me the same thing about being myself, and I don’t know how to respond, Spice Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfnhV7bJUYM

When I feel I need advice on life, I think of sunscreen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmAReOklwNY

  26. Sorry I am of not help concerning your question which of course doesn’t stop me from commenting ;-). Your tom cat is lovely indeed. Cats like me a lot and I guess it is because I let them sleep quietly besides me. I try to resist the temptation to stroke them since I am quite allergic to them. Much unlike me they seem to appreciate my sneezing.

  27. LOVE that you have “All About That Bass” in your mix. Cuz it’s awesome.

I thought today about how you once said that you fight through your days in the dark because “she only has one mom.” I don’t have the right words to tell you how admirable that is. My dad didn’t care enough about me to fight and he let his diseases and addictions take over HAPPILY. You are doing more for yourself and your family than maybe you’ll ever know.

  28. Thank you so much for the song posts, they really helped. Yesterday did suck, for a variety of reasons. But today is a new day and like you mentioned (something like this)….if you’re reading this, you’re ok.

  29. Walked into work and everyone had the same mentality: yesterday was FUCKED. UP. Give me some motherfucking kittens, stat. It’s now noon. We’ve been here since 8:30 and ain’t done shit but watch cat videos, listen to cats meow, and that cute ass kid in the carseat who jams the fuck out to Katy Perry (is that Katy Perry? I don’t know and I don’t care because that baby brings me joy on a day after one of the mostfuckedup days in a long time). I am cursey today. I know y’all don’t care.

  30. Thanks for doing this, definitely need kitties and happy songs today. Here’s one of my favorite videos to watch, Star ships just look so giddy set to this song.

  31. Yesterday sucked a giant butthole for me too. But then I played this at my desk and pretended I was Melissa McCarthy and it made my face happy. Enjoy!

  32. It’s not kittens or a song, but it always makes me laugh, and laughing is good. Especially today.

As for your question, all I know is that my not-quite-5-yr-old-niece was channeling Hunter S. Thomcat last week on a family vacation: I don’t like it here. It’s boring. There are no toys. I’m boooorrrrreeeeedddd!!!! Hey everyone, pay attention to me!

Also, re #5, that’s the sonnet I chose to memorize in college (and when things aren’t light, I find it going through my head), but I didn’t get the revised version where Shakespeare mentions felines. My text must have been outdated.

  33. Thanks for posting cat pictures and not another poll. I’ve been trying to lose weight and your polls seem to always make me hungry.

  34. The cat I used to have would wake me up when the birds started chirping at 4 am because she wanted out. So I started leaving her out all night. Then she would sit outside my bedroom window crying because she wanted to eat at 4 AM. My neighbor loved her, said she had attitude. But she wasn’t the one that was getting up at 4 AM to answer to that attitude.
Thanks for the videos. Definitely made me smile.

  35. There is no difference between kittens and kids at anytime ! Except kittens sleep more. And as always thanks for the smiles.

  36. It’s difficult to compose succinct text for a major web site when the subject makes you sob uncontrollably. Playing All about that Bass about a hundred times fixed that shit right up. #kittens (don’t hurt the kittens!) #unicorns farts #doublerainbows #allthefeels #Idon’tactuallyknowhowhashtagswork

  37. Ah, the internet. Where I can get my cat-lady fix without all the allergies and dying.

    Never change.

  38. I wish there had been some way for all of us that have been touched by Mr. Williams to get to him before his demons did. 🙁 I’m a blubbery mess today, and I’m glad to know I”m not alone in that.

  39. I have been bummed all morning at work and when someone stood me up for a phone meeting today, I proceed to waste 10 minutes watching my cats try to fight each other on either side of my office door. Now I feel much better! (and yes, i need to paint my door – it’s gross! Don’t judge)

    /Users/shawna/Desktop/IMG_1502.JPG

  40. Louise (the Queen of Everything) used to try to strangle me at night. But she couldn’t decide whether to use a blood choke or a wind choke, so now she just tries to smother me with her butt.

  41. Thank you! My cat: instagram.com/p/n3p2sFvZYa/ Dumbest cat on the planet, but so sweet. Also re-watching Breaking Bad. Not feeling guilty for my lack of focus today. Self-care/mental health day.

  42. Quote from a great book…and very appropriate:

“The man walked past me and stopped, observing the blood running down my neck.

“Your injury. Let us tend to it.” He looked out through the open doorway and silently gestured to someone out there. “Our world,” he said, “is far more advanced than yours. For reasons you’ll understand shortly.”

A thin, bony, naked woman entered the room, carrying two small, white kittens. She sat one of the fluffy cats in my lap and stuffed the other down my shirt. She turned and left.

“There,” said the large man. “The kittens will make your sad go away.”
― David Wong, John Dies at the End

  43. Thank you, Jenny, for brightening my day today. You really hit to the core and can make me smile, even on bad days. You keep going, so I shall do the same. Love ya, your cats and your way with words about your life. ♥

  44. I’m in the process of having a seriously shit day emotionally, and you just made me feel better. Thank you for being able to work through your shit enough to share your voice. It rings like clear bells on a shore in the fog and reminds me feeling adrift at sea is just a temporary till-next-I-dock kinda thing. <3

  45. Holy crap! Your songs were AWESOME! And I’d never heard of either of those gals (because I live under a rock, apparently)

  46. It turns out that not everyone plays “Spoonful of Sugar” when they’re cleaning their homes. I find it makes housecleaning a lot more festive. Also, I think it would be smart to use it to brainwash kids into thinking cleaning is fun. You’re welcome.

  47. I like to Google image search pictures of pikas when work becomes overly stressful. Sounds weird, but I highly recommend it!

  48. Christina Grimmie – Feeling Good. Go find it and listen.

Also, my eternal happy song is Safety Dance.

  49. I needed that laugh. Son has been bugging me all day, in the middle of a huge deadline. Somehow the umpteen thousand times I’ve already told him I am not responsible for his entertainment hasn’t stuck. At least my yard got mowed…

  50. I love this, thanks for sharing! I’ve been purposely avoiding FB and the internet, because I’ve already heard all I want to hear and Robin Williams was the icing on the cake. Hunter looks so like my Oliver, and it reminded me of these last 2 days when I awoke to find Oliver staring me down and waiting for me to get up. Cats make life more fun. They just do.

  51. Dude. Those back feet on Hunter S. Thomkitten are frightening. Prehensile. He’s trying to lull you with his thumb-less-ness while he grows dexterous toes!

  52. My go-to giggle song is Eminem’s “Without Me”.. I can’t explain it, but I love the word twisting. My mom passed yesterday morning too, and then when I heard about Robin Williams, my odd first thought was “What a great person to cross over with..” Mom hugged him and welcomed him, I have no doubt. No more pain, no more agony. Not in any hurry to join them but grateful their suffering is done. My work will continue and who knows what’s next?

  53. Thank you for lightening the mood. I had the pleasure of meeting Robin Williams once & have the most respect for him. His death is affecting me more than it probably should. Depression does lie. I’m going to snuggle something fuzzy & lovable for a little bit. Thanks everyone for being there, for everyone including me.

  54. stressful days mean nostalgia music from Sesame Street. It’s not easy bein’ green(preferably with Ray Charles and Kermit), Sing by the Carpenters, and Rubber Duckie. But Billy Joel’s Keeping the Faith and You’re Only Human(Second Wind) are good too. My new favorite is The Killers, Be Still. Really listen to it. You all do have a lot of heart and you will rise like the sun.
Just remember Tomorrow will be better. Make it so! Capt Picard says so.

  55. As a 40 something mother with self image issues, I think I just found my new theme song – I’m bringing booty back! lol

  56. Trying to post a picture of a dog that looked like a cat, parked in a walker/shopper outside the chemist in the snow yesterday while its old lady owner filled her script. Only can’t work out how to do it. Made me want to be an old dog lady straight away, which is strange because I’m a crazy cat lady like the best of em. Kia kaha Missy Bloggess (maori for stay strong)

  57. Year round school rocks out loud!! When there’s only six weeks of summer vacation, the kiddos don’t have enough time to get to that super bored state. Or they’re afraid I’ll make them do school work if they mention even once they’re bored. Either way, I’m happy. 🙂

  58. Reblogged this on breezingalong and commented:
Absolutely needed this today. And the link to the song “Secrets” …Is she talking about me or herself? I already know the REAL answer but, again, this was needed today.

  59. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I love it here. Long live the Bloggess, long live the Bloggess Kingdom! Here’s what I have:
    Fuck depression

  60. Here’s my kitten tale. There were two kittens for adoption. I had a cat, he needed a buddy. I took the slightly less crazy cat. The first day I had her she climbed up my brother’s leg and ate his hamburger right from his plate as he was trying to eat it. I got her to my apartment, where I lived alone. The record for number of times I threw her off me while eating dinner was 35. Kitten was always snuggling me in bed. One night I start dreaming. I’m being attacked by a malevolent hooded figure who is using a specifically shaped tool to slash at my face. I start to fight the figure in my dream, by scratching and hitting and biting. I was also doing that physically. I bit the cat. I can still remember how her skin felt rolling over the bone in her leg. It took her three months to return to the bed with me at night and she never slept near my head again.

  61. oops! I didn’t mean to post the whole play list…oh well, enjoy ALL my baby videos then. The spinning on is the last one…

  62. My favorite happy song is probably “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. I love how the song is so upbeat even though it’s basically proclaiming the end of the world. It’s all like “Hey life is shit right now but I’m gonna dance anyway motherfuckers.” That’s a message I can get behind.

  63. I don’t know that anything I say will be enough. But I love someone who fights with depression every day. And I know that depression is a liar. And you are a truth teller. And I love you for that. Fight the liar every day. Keep fighting.

  64. I love you and this AM I so watched I’m all about the bass just to see that guy dance….DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING!

  65. I wanted to comment on your post yesterday with this link, but the comments were closed, sad face 🙁

The VA also has a site devoted to their “crisis line” for veterans and their families going through any kind of emotional crisis. They even have an online chat option which is extra helpful for those of us with intense anxiety about talking on the phone to a person! You can even take a quiz about how you’re feeling/thinking and somebody will contact you, if it’s hard to take the initiative on your own. They have lots of resources can be helpful to anyone.

    http://veteranscrisisline.net

It’s helped me out more times than I can count, and I’m putting this here in hopes that somebody else out there can get some use out of it too. <3

  66. Yeah–BITE ME, yesterday. (Not all that thrilled about today, either.) Thanks for the kitten pics and for “Secrets”… I just loved that video, and hadn’t seen it before. (And thanks to the person who put up that great version of “Happy”)

My cat Magic the Cat, Queen of the Universe, likes to start out the morning lying by my head and purring sweetly. Then if I don’t get up to feed her fast enough, she pulls my hair. I kid you not.
(I was going to add a picture of the goofy Angus, but I can’t figure out how to do that, so well, my cat is goofy. You can see him on my blog or FB.

  67. When I discovered that I didn’t listen to many upbeat songs, and decided I should look into that, I found a Canadian band called Great Big Sea (wiki link – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Big_Sea) who as well as original songs do interpretations of folk songs and sea shanties. I recommend
    [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_ADKryAL7g?rel=0&w=560&h=315%5D
and Captian Kidd, and Ordinary Day, and Mary Mac, and pretty much all the songs I have heard from them. If you want to hear the happiest, most upbeat, fastest, most cheerful version of “end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)” that makes you think they really do feel fine you should listen to their version.

  68. i’m pretty much living on “all about the base” these days – it makes me giggle, and then I start to wiggle and then it’s all smooth sailing into happy days from there!

  69. So, yesterday my 73-year-old father fell off a ladder. Two cracked ribs, internal and external bruising, and generally pain all over. Yeah, yesterday sucked.

  70. Yesterday, one of my cats killed a mouse and left it for me to dispose of. Not cool, Teddy. Today was marathons of Doctor Who, Full House and Friends, and I also worked on crocheting a baby dalek hat for my shop. Also, my other cat, Ruby obliterated a wasp but she took care of the body, So today was much better than yesterday.

  71. I can only remind you that the second and biggest supermoon of the year was a couple of days ago. And to anyone, who felt shitty or is feeling shitty, blame it on the moon. I did. I even wrote a shitty song about a full moon once. And then someone recorded my shitty song on a shitty mobile. It’s here.

  72. Fleetwood Mac: Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow

Sums it all up. I’m hanging on for my kids

  73. Also,, try the first few pages of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Free (!!!) on Kindle. Jenny please tell those of us who don’t know , how to post a photo with a comment . I’d like to share a wonderful happy photo of my son, but don’t know how. Nick

  74. Also, my past two days have been consumed by listening to “Thomas the Dank Engine” music. It’s a mash-up of hardcore rap and the theme from the children’s show “Thomas the Tank Engine.” I have never laughed so hard! Here’s a link to the best one-

There’s another one that is done with Iggy Azalea’s Fancy that is also good for a laugh!

  75. I must tell you what happened after I read this post last nite. I proceeded to watch the videos. And the I rewatched the Bass video. And then I rewatched it again. And then I tried to dance like the girls in the video. And after a few more times of listening and trying to dance in my tiny bathroom I realized that I have a big TV out in the family room with lots more room to dance! And no one was home! So I went out and put it on the big TV and proceeded to try and dance like the girls in the video and while most of those moves are completely foreign to my body but it was fun! And then the hubby came home and he sat down and watched the video. And soon my 17yo son came home and watched the video and after I explained to him that this was a video about loving your body at any size he then told me in his disgusted-with-his-parents-voice that I should quit twerking! I thought twerking was something you did with someone, like the new dirty dancing. I had no clue it was just shaking your butt. So now I’ve gotten pretty-good-for-a-white-lady at a dance that I found out is frowned upon. But it sure was fun! Thanks for the laughs and keep them coming cuz I need them!!!

  76. Things that make me smile… besides my daughter, how about our favorite comic? Girl Genius is an online steampunk comic. Worth reading the whole thing, but my favorite image is this one. Agatha — who is so smart she’s nearly magical with technology — has fixed, nay PERFECTED!! — the coffeepot. http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20070618
(And my daughter likes Mama Gkika enough that I may try to make a Halloween costume…Blue, busty, tough, teeth…and a corset.)

For funny music I like the Austin Lounge Lizards and Christine Lavin.

  77. This might be part of the solution to the riddle:

  78. There is no telling how many tears were shed yesterday and the night before. My mother passed away 4 months ago and my daughter was more upset over Robin Williams. I guess it is the way a person passes that is more upsetting. Today is better… the sad fog is lifting and I can only hope that his passing gets people to notice those around them that need help.

  79. perfect post for yesterday. I called in sick yesterday because my depression was strong. today is better.

  80. Already had All That Bass and was just forced to Download secrets. What a great song! I feel I’ll be singing this a lot in the coming days.

  81. I was reading a list of top 25 bloggers (2013) and came across your blog. You know I have always been curious to know why a top blogger is actually a ‘top blogger’. What makes them the best?
so, I came here looking to observe what you are the best and I didn’t do that to see if you really are or not. I did that to learn and observe what all goes in to be the best and I think I got my answer.
Your posts are something that represent you and it is always good to meet a person who is confident enough to believe in himself and share the life lessons with all.
P.S. Seriously, there is no difference between a cat and a child during summer holidays. 😛 It doesn’t seem to be here.

  82. I can’t figure out how to post a pic, so I’ll just say I love you, even though that’s kind of weird to say to someone I don’t even know.

  83. Seriously, I think the “super” moon had a lot to do with making people feel crappy this week. Brings out the crazy in all of us, I barely left my bed for three days

  84. I don’t know how you do it. When I’m feeling at my worst, you always manage to post something that speaks right to it and pulls the cleaning crew in my head out of their smoke break.

  85. Okay, so my 9 month old fur baby (Iggy, short for Ig-Gnaw, as he chews on things all the time) has a pet monkey toy that he carries around the house and when he gets upset (like when we have a heavy rain storm, because the roof is corrugated iron, which makes it really loud). It seems when he goes to sleep, he has to have his pet monkey with him, as pretty much every day this week I have woken up to him leaning (hard) against me, curled up with his monkey…cute, but weird…I guess at least he has a friend, even if it is one that he alternates between hugging and kicking the living sh….um, daylights out of. Oh, and he has a small felt mouse that he ‘kills’ a lot – I get woken up by him dropping it on my pillow in the morning. So long as it isn’t a real mouse, I’m okay with that though….

  86. Thank you for kitten pictures. My Bobby died on Thursday and I am very sad. Kittens help, especially Hunter S. Thomkitten.

  87. The second to last picture of Hunter looks like he’s related to a cobra. (sorry) the last one is very Sphinx like. Just proving the HST is a versatile cat.

  88. So what. Never heard it. But thanks for it bloggess, as a big booty girl who’s junk is not in ALL the right places, I’m digging the big beautiful woman movement. Thanks again for a dose of happy
