Read with us in September!

Before I forget, if you’re a Fantastic Strangeling be sure to check your book mail because we’re slipping this gorgeous Nowhere sticker into your package when we mail your book:

(And if you sign up this month you can get one too.)

And now, MAGICAL CATS SERVING YOU PASTRIES AND TELLING YOU HOW TO FIX YOUR SHIT.

Did I get your attention? Awesome.

Because this month members of the Fantastic Strangelings book club will be getting The Full Moon Coffee Shop by Mai Mochizuki. It’s a bestseller in Japan for good reason because it’s charming and delightful and full of magic cats serving coffee and pastries to lost people. I loved it and it was just the simple, heartwarming thing I needed to pick me up. A bit of the astrology stuff went over my head (astrology is quite popular in Japan) but you don’t need to understand it to love the book. It sort of reminded me of Midnight Diner, which you should watch if you haven’t seen it because it is such a lovely, quiet comfort watch.

And if you’re a member of the Nightmares from Nowhere bookclub you’ll be getting HOUSE OF BONE AND RAIN by Gabino Iglesias.

In the latest from Shirley Jackson and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of THE DEVIL TAKES YOU HOME, a group of young men seek vengeance after one of their mothers is murdered in a Puerto Rican slum; STAND BY ME with a haunted, obsidian-dark heart.  I couldn’t put it down.

And in case you, like me, need more than one book to get you through the month, here are a few new releases I loved:

There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak – This book destroyed me but it’s incredible. A historical fiction novel about three characters living along two rivers, all under the shadow of one of the greatest epic poems of all time, Gilgamesh. I cried so hard I gave myself a headache.

Death at Morning House by Maureen Johnson – A stand-alone YA about a teen who uncovers a mystery while working as a tour guide on an island and must solve it before history repeats itself.

The Unmothers by Leslie J. Anderson – In this raw and lyrical folk horror novel, a journalist sent to a small town begins to unravel a dark secret that the women of the town have been keeping for generations.

The Volcano Daughters by Gina María Balibrera – A searingly original debut about two sisters and their flight from genocide—which takes them from Hollywood to Paris to San Francisco’s Cannery Row—each haunted along the way by the ghosts of their murdered friends, who are not yet done telling their stories.

Earth to Moon: A Memoir by Moon Unit Zappa, daughter of musical visionary Frank Zappa. Moon recounts her unconventional upbringing, coming of age in the Hollywood Hills in the 1980s as the “Valley Girl,” gaining momentum as an accidental VJ on MTV, and finding herself after losing her parents.

Happy reading, friends!

  1. How do I go about being a part of book clubs??? I love reading.

(We have a few to choose from that are all amazing. https://www.nowherebookshop.com/nowhere-bookshop-subscription-clubs They’re different prices and genres. I pick the books for The Fantastic Strangelings and Nightmares from Nowhere and send out emails to member. It’s $25 a month for a hardcover book and you can pick it up at the store or we can mail it to you if you’re not in San Antonio. Come read! ~ Jenny)

  2. Wait…I missed August! lol!

(Jesus Christ. What is wrong with me? ~ Jenny)

  3. Do Nightmares members get a sticker too? I’m a member of that one. (Although sometimes I wish I could switch back and forth). The Strangeling book this month looks fun.

(Probably not this month. We had extra money this month in the Strangelings because the book was a little cheaper than what we normally pick. Usually the books are $25-30 but this one was only $24, I think. But it’s definitely a possibility in the future if we end up selecting a nightmares book that’s less than our usual price. 🙂 ~ jenny)

  4. Jenny!!!

My name is Sulastri (she/her) from Singapore. I’m an aspiring writer. And I am in dire, dire, dire, dire, dire, need of a writing mentor. (My local writing mentor totally bailed on me. It’s a long story.)

Anyway, I’ve got these written … thingies, but I don’t even know if they’re funny. Or even which freaking genre of writing they fall into.

Would it be okay for you to take a very quick look at some samples of my writing? I just need to know (1) if they’re funny, and (2) vaguely meaningful.

I’ve listened to Furiously Happy and Broken so many times on Audible and laughed out loud in public so many times that I have lost count. (Don’t blame me, I have dyscalculia. Yup, 7 + 8 is the bane of my existence. Just can’t compute that shit in my head.)

I also have generalised anxiety disorder, so thank you so much for … well, for being you.

    With all my love,
    Sulastri

PS. I sent you an email. Please don’t declare email bankruptcy on me. Thanks!

(you can always write to me but I suck at responding. Keep writing! All stories are meaningful. ~ Jenny)

  5. I had to stop my subscription because I’m too poor for monthly books and now I’m bummed I’m gonna miss the sticker 😭😭😭

  6. I just love to read since I was a kid. However, when I started college, I wasn’t able to set aside enough time to read for pleasure. However, after I started using https://edubirdie.com/exam-help-online to help me with my studies and to prepare for exams, I found that I had a lot more time. It was a very nice bonus.

  7. This is such a fantastic post! I love your book recommendations, especially The Full Moon Coffee Shop and House of Bone and Rain. They sound absolutely captivating.

Your art substack is a great idea, and I’m excited to see what you create. I’m also intrigued by the idea of an art exchange. It’s a wonderful way to connect with other creative people.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and recommendations. I’m looking forward to diving into these books!
